Promoting GP Locums was the focus of Health 24-7 at the GP11 Conference in Hobart earlier this month. Held over three days on 6-8 October and coordinated by The Royal Australian College for General Practitioners, the event was a great success.

Health 24-7 attended as trade exhibitors, with Director Sacha Etherington and Recruitment Officer Rose Doualetas managing the stand. Both enjoyed meeting with delegates and industry members, and found the event to be interesting and informative.

Locum Workshop

Sacha also presented a workshop on the first day of the conference, entitled Emergency Medicine for General Practitioners. The seminar was designed to give those in attendance some knowledge around the idea of GP locums, focusing on work in acute care settings.

On the day, Sacha addressed a number of commonly asked questions, such as:

How do I get a GP locum?

Where do I go?

Who do I talk to?

How do I know what is right for me?

What does it involve?

Can I take my family?

Will I have time for study?

Can I utilise my extended skill set?

If you were unable to attend the conference, but would like to know more about what was presented in the workshop, please contact us now.

A snapshot profile of registered health practitioners was recently released by the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA). National Registration has allowed for information to be compiled within the 10 health professions.

When speaking of the National Scheme, AHPRA CEO Martin Fletcher said “it is one of the most ambitious regulatory reforms undertaken anywhere in the world and placed public and patient safety at the heart of health practitioner regulation.”

While it is not an accurate representation of practitioners currently working, it does highlight a few interesting statistics and also makes it possible for the first time ever to know exactly how many registered practitioners there are across the country.

Across the 10 professions (including chiropractic, dental, medical, nursing and midwifery, optometry, osteopathy, pharmacy, physiotherapy, podiatry and psychology), there are 528,000 registered health practitioners. Of these, medical practitioners count for almost 88,000.

Approximately half of all registered practitioners are due to renew their registration in May and June this year. To see if you may be affected, you can check your renewal date on the National Register of Practitioners on the AHPRA website www.ahpra.gov.au – alternatively, simply contact us if you have any questions regarding your registration, as we are more than happy to help.

AHPRA is sending email and mail reminders to all practitioners who’s registration is due for renewal with information on how to renew online. For more information, you can contact AHPRA on 1300 419 495 (+61 7 3666 4911 for international calls).

In the last month, there have been 29 recorded cases of measles in NSW, seven of which were related to unvaccinated or partially vaccinated travellers returning from overseas.

“In Australia most people diagnosed with measles have recently travelled overseas and not been vaccinated,” said Dr Jeremy McAnulty, Director of Centre for Health Protection. “However, most of the recent measles cases have no history of overseas travel indicating there has been spread within the local community to people who are not fully vaccinated.”

Locum doctors working within NSW Health are required to provide documented evidence of immunisation against measles, mumps and rubella if born during or after 1966.

Before commencing work, health practitioners must also show screening or vaccination against the following infectious diseases: hepatitis B, varicella (chickenpox), TB as well as diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis. Acceptable evidence is outlined in the table below; however, for more information on what is required please contact your Health 24-7 representative.
