Western Australia joins Medical Board of Australia

Wednesday 27, October 2010

On 18 October 2010 Western Australia joined the National Registration and Accreditation Scheme, the last remaining of all states and territories to join the national system.

As a result, all medical practitioners who held current registration with the Medical Board of Western Australia at the time of the changeover are now registered with the Medical Board of Australia and able to practice nationwide. Similarly, those who were already registered with the Medical Board of Australia can now work within Western Australia without the need to apply for WA registration separately through mutual recognition.

Those with registration due to expire on 30 September who did not renew will not have transitioned to the national scheme. Any practitioners from Western Australia that were due to renew their registration on 30 September and failed to do so are now not currently registered.

However, a fast track application option is available for Western Australian practitioners who did not renew on time that does not require proof of identity, verification of qualifications or English language skills and does not require registration history, work history or CPD declarations. The application fee has been waived, although you must still pay the registration fee.

Practitioners from other states and territories that transitioned to the new scheme in July who were due to renew their registration on 30 September must do so before 31 October. Failure to do so will result in a loss of registration and your name will be removed from the Register of Practitioners.
