Medicare Provider Numbers

Friday 04, March 2011

The definition provided by Medicare Australia is that “a provider number uniquely identifies the medical practitioner and the location from which a service is rendered”. A provider number cannot be transferred from one address to another.

Although generally locums of less than two weeks do not require a location specific provider number, in some cases it is hospital policy that a locum practitioner is required to obtain one, regardless of the length of the locum shift. We are finding that most hospitals are adopting this policy and requesting that all locum doctors submit an application.

Applying for an additional location provider number is a relatively simple process and one that we are more than happy to assist with. Merely complete and sign a two-page form, which can be downloaded from the Medicare website or alternatively ask your Health 24-7 consultant to email or fax you a copy.

Once the form is completed simply return the form to your consultant and they with then fax it off to Medicare. It takes approximately five working days to process an additional location, after which you will receive a letter notifying you of the new number.

If you are an overseas trained doctor or foreign graduate of an accredited medical school, you are subject to regulations set out in section 19AA and 19AB of the Health Insurance Act 1973. In this instance, there are additional forms and documents required. For more information you can call Medicare Australia on 132 150 or contact us.
