Hospital Profile - Launceston General

Friday 11, March 2011

Operational for 147 years, Launceston General Hospital is the second largest in Tasmania as well as the main referral centre for the northern region. An accredited teaching hospital with close links to the University of Tasmania, it also hosts the Clifford Craig Medical Research Trust.

The 310-bed facility is currently undergoing a $104.9 million redevelopment, including plans for an Acute Medical Unit that will become a forerunner in Australia based on a new model of care and patient flow. The proposal also includes an expansion of the emergency department.

The hospital attends to an immediate population of 150,000. Launceston is located where two rivers meet in the Tamar Valley and is also Australia’s third oldest city. The area is the perfect place to visit with family, being the safest region in the country’s safest state. From boardwalk cafes and wine bars to the Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery, there is something for everyone.
