AHPRA Practitioner Snapshot

Friday 29, April 2011

A snapshot profile of registered health practitioners was recently released by the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA). National Registration has allowed for information to be compiled within the 10 health professions.

When speaking of the National Scheme, AHPRA CEO Martin Fletcher said “it is one of the most ambitious regulatory reforms undertaken anywhere in the world and placed public and patient safety at the heart of health practitioner regulation.”

While it is not an accurate representation of practitioners currently working, it does highlight a few interesting statistics and also makes it possible for the first time ever to know exactly how many registered practitioners there are across the country.

Across the 10 professions (including chiropractic, dental, medical, nursing and midwifery, optometry, osteopathy, pharmacy, physiotherapy, podiatry and psychology), there are 528,000 registered health practitioners. Of these, medical practitioners count for almost 88,000.

Approximately half of all registered practitioners are due to renew their registration in May and June this year. To see if you may be affected, you can check your renewal date on the National Register of Practitioners on the AHPRA website www.ahpra.gov.au – alternatively, simply contact us if you have any questions regarding your registration, as we are more than happy to help.

AHPRA is sending email and mail reminders to all practitioners who’s registration is due for renewal  with information on how to renew online. For more information, you can contact AHPRA on 1300 419 495 (+61 7 3666 4911 for international calls).
