Professional Forum: Effective Ways of Engaging Men

In conjunction with Men’s Health Services, Far West and Western NSW Local Health Networks are conducting a one-day program on effectively communicating health and wellbeing messages to men. The program is targeted towards men and women who work in organisations that provide health, welfare, wellbeing or community services for men and boys.

Mount Gambier Hospital is the major regional health provider in the South East of South Australia. The health facility contains 78 public beds, 12 day surgery chairs in addition to the 20-bed private hospital also onsite. There are four operating theatres and three delivery suites as well as medical, surgical, high dependency, mental health, maternity and paediatric units.

Orange Base Hospital update

A farewell celebration was held on Saturday 12 March to say goodbye to the old Orange Base Hospital building, before moving into the new $250-million-dollar facility on Forest Road. The new hospital was officially opened at 6am on Wednesday 16 March.

Armidale Hospital is an 93-bed Rural Referral hospital, operating since 1885. Medical services include medicine, surgery, obstetrics, paediatrics, geriatrics, A&E as well as out patient clinics. There are also a range of Allied Health services available, such as radiology, pathology, occupational and speech therapy, social work and physiotherapy.

AHPRA Update on Lapsed Registrants

Since the start of the national registration scheme in July 2010, the registration of almost 8000 health practitioners has lapsed. Renewals must be received within one month of the expiry date to avoid removal from the National Register.

National Registration update

As of 1 July 2010, medicine (along with nine other health professions) is now operating under a national registration and accreditation scheme. If you held current registration with a State or Territory medical board on 30 June 2010, then you will automatically transition to the national scheme.

On 1 July 2009 a new policy was released by Qld Health regarding the employment of locum medical practitioners. The policy has not come into effect as yet and is currently under review. A date has not yet been announced for the release of the final version. However, the majority of Qld Health facilities appear to be implementing these changes to streamline cost and responsibility.
